What is a planet? 

In our solar system, eight planets have been classified as of 2013. In order from the closest to the sun to the farthest are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

 

Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are classified as terrestrial planets. These planets have a solid surface, unlike the remaining four planets. 

Jupiter and Saturn are classified as the Gaseous Giants.

Uranus and Neptune, the furthest planets from the sun, are classified as Ice Giants.
